Isengard are worth starting. They have a wide range of troops. Berserkers aren't as good as they appear - at least in Maelstrom - they get shot down straight away. A troll is better in my opinion.

Isengard is probably the army I have played the most lately and I've had a lot of fun with them. The basic troops are tough as nails, Saruman has some nice spells and cool abilities, you have some good heros and legendary formations to choose from (Vrashku's Talons rock).

Yes, the berserkers are archery magnets, but they can be worth it just for the distraction while other units move around freely without being shot at. They take two hits to go down and have a decent defence, with bows having to roll sixes. If the berserkers do get into action, they can be awesome. In the last game I played a company of berserkers with 5 figures remaining charged a formation of Riders of Rohan including Eomer. The Riders failed their courage check badly, but Eomer called Epic strike, taking out one berserker. The Berserkers rolled their charge bonus which was a 6, plus their 4 normal attacks, plus 5 for the fight difference. They also rolled "Carnage Unbound" raising their strength to ten. They lost one attack because of two handed weapons but with the +1 to hit they were rolling 2's to hit. 6 riders went down, as on 15 rolls I rolled two ones. If those had have been twos Eomer would have gone down as well. Eomer promplty vacated to another formation of Riders. I had a Troll Captain in the same battle and he went down in one turn to Haldir's Epic Shot.
