Bilbo's kill

Tue Jan 14, 2014 8:31 pm

It seems that everybody is considering the small pale creature which Bilbo slays when he loses the Ring to have been a spider. However, I think it was a centipede. Any thoughts?
Good: Elves (Rivendell, Lothlorien & Mirkwood), Men (Rohan, Gondor, Rangers of the North & Dale/Esgaroth), Dwarves & Hobbits.
Evil: Moria, Isengard, Harad & Mordor.

I don't what it was, I just remember feeling incredibly sorry for it.

It gave out this tiny whimpering noise as it died, as if it was asking, in vain, 'Why?'

I don't think its a spider at all. It takes just one swipe of sting to wound or kill the spiders whereas this little fella took a beating. My guess is that it is some form of crab that has been deformed by mirkwood's evil. His colour may just be thought of as a stone camouflage. It doesn't have enough legs to be a centipede does it?

The whole scene is supposed to be about a calm gentle hobbit being driven mad by the ring and killing an apparently innocent creature just to get the ring (which it didn't actually possess), which Bilbo later realises and almost throws up. Anyway - not a spider.

I'm pretty sure it's a Trapdoor Spider. It looks like one and uses the same hunting techniques.

Just my thoughts. Whatever it is, poor bugger.... :( Don't mess with a ringbearer :D

From what I can remember it didn't look much like a spider.

I think it was some sort of centipede as well.

Having seen it again I think it is a centipede.
