I'm really not sure what the author was getting at here. She proposes that ASOIAF isn't original, and then goes on to note a number of ways in which it is. The article devolves into a rambling mess by the end. Plus that question in the last paragraph, "Isn't it time we came up with something new?" There's plenty of fantasy out there which is completely different from either LOTR or ASOIAF. They just happen to be intensely popular.

You know, the more I look at it, the more this article bothers me, there's basically no theme to it. Just a bunch of random facts about the two series with a really weak premise of one being better than the other to play off of.
