The Cardinal sins in Middle-earth

Thu Jan 23, 2014 10:19 pm

I just watched a movie called Se7en and got this random idea of connecting each Deadly sin with one of the evil characters from Tolkien's universe. They would look great if some artist would actually draw them like some lotr tarot cards I've seen.

These were my thoughts:

Pride - Melkor (His was the original sin of wanting credit and lordship for himself)

Lust - Ungoliant (Called Mistress of her own lust, Ungoliant devoured all light of Valinor but still wanted more)

Greed - Smaug (Took Erebor and horded it's treasures with dragonic greed)

Envy - Saruman (His envy of Gandalf and of Sauron's power led him to his downfall)

Wrath - Gothmog (Lord of Balrogs and Commander of Morgoth's armies this guy had to a bit angry)

Loth - ??????? Didn't have enough imagination for this one :D

Gluttony - Carcaroth (Gluttony would have suited Ungoliant but since she was taken, I thought maybe Carcaroth)

These sins could also be associated with Elvish lords and reasons of their downfalls, like Fingolfin was driven mad by wrath after the Battle of Sudden Flame and rode to Angband)

It would be interesting to hear your thoughts!

Interesting idea.

Perhaps Denethor or one of the old kings of Gondor could be associated with sloth for failing to prevent the kingdom's deterioration.

Smeagol comes under Envy (his envy of Deagol's discovery of the one ring led him to murder his friend).

And his alter ego, Gollum comes under Lust (he lusted for the Ring all his life).

Pride - Saruman, first thought that Sauron couldn't come back, then thought Gandalf couldn't escape him, thought he could make an army and win with Sauron. Saruman always sounds like he is talking down to everyone. Hubris a bit.
Denethor as well, He thought he deserved the throne and that nobody else could rule like him.

Lust - Sauron lusts for power and the ring. Gollum Lusts for the ring. Wormtongue lusts for Eowyn and is easily seduced into Sarumans side through this manipulation.

Greed - Smaug is just following his nature, I don't consider him greedy because he has the strength to go get more gold if he wanted more. I think the dwarves are the greedy ones, they horded wealth and still delved for more, had they spread it out (how socialist I sound, eew) and shared with those around them they would have strong allies to help and they would not have attracted the Dragon to their hordes. They can only blame themselves.

At work so I cannot think of the rest yet... :) I also am not familiar with the first age guys.

if you took focus off of evil (which is just a perspective anyway) Ents are pretty sloth. They have all the time and can talk to trees yet didn't find the ent wives nor any tale of them... Seriously lazy. and just not getting involved and allowing the world to pass along without them... It is good that Merry and Pip jarred them into action.

Okay, by that Matt-Shadowlord's quote Smaug definitely "earns" the sloth. :D

I agree with Sithious about ents. It's the time that wearies them, I think. Treebeard sang to Merry and Pippin about forests he used to roam in around the old Beleriand in the First age and now all ents are just sulking in Fangorn.

Saruman is interesting. He's definitely too proud of himself, which I think leads to his envy towards Gandalf. But now that I think about it, did Saruman even knew that Círdan gave the Ring of Fire to Gandalf? Saruman was specialized in ring craft so I think he was aware of the whereabouts of the Three. But on the other hand if he didn't know about the ring, would there be much to be envious about. He himself had a fine tower and a palantiri when Gandalf was only a ragged pilgrim. Maybe the fact that Galadriel seemed to think Gandalf better than Saruman was cause of his envy?
