The long-term plan of TLA

Sat Mar 10, 2012 6:24 pm

Hey guys,

So I thought I'd just put this up here so you can all see what our long term plan is at TLA, not all of this has been discussed in full, so nothing is set in stone and I'd love to hear your opinions on it.

Basically by the time the hobbit comes out with tons of new stuff and new people following it, we want TLA to be a luxurious haven of Lord of the Rings goodies. To do this we have a few ideas on things we want to implement on the website (Campaign, A sorted article system, Rank system etc), as well as updating the look of it, the images on it and basically, have it looking awesome.

To do the above we need someone with good experience and knowledge in websites to work on TLA so we've taken the decision over summer to 'employ' a web developer to work on the site. For those that don't know, I do Computer Science at university, and as such many of my friends have done web development since they were young (I wasn't that cool!). Therefore the plan is to employ one of my course mate on 'mates rates', so we get an awesome looking website, with someone I can reliably get help from if something goes wrong, and at a cheaper rate then normal.

Now obviously the question is, where is this money coming from?

To get the money we have three ways, of which 1 is implemented now, 1 is being implemented in the next few days, and 1 will be implemented in the next few weeks, so, in order;

1 - Our current sponsors, Marauder Games, give us a % of their profits/sales, and as it stands with the recent releases, this has proved a decent source of income and I look forward to building our partnership with them especially with all the new releases to come.

2 - Google Ads. Booo! Ads. These are coming, and although they won't bring us in very much income, they will all add up. They won't overtake the forum, but they'll obviously be noticeable.

3 - Donations. Since the old TLA went down, we've had no income, and ultimatley many of us use and love these forums, sometimes a little too much. This is a request, we're not gonna charge or demand, but we have 1400+ members, of which many are regular posters. If you're one of these regular posters please think about donating £5 one off, or £1 a month, or anything really, it'll all go toward making the website a better place and we'll appreciate every penny.

The plan with the money is first and foremost to pay back the relevant people on the payments they've made on both the domain name and the servers, and after that we'll be saving up and doing work on the forum ASAP.

Once the forum is fully functional we have some even longer thoughts on what we can do (TLA store anyone?), but that is way in the future.

I'd love to hear your comments on this thread, and see what you guys think, so please comment!

I'll be setting up a donate button at some point but TLA does have a paypal account and email address at the minute, I'll get it checked and put up later!

How much does it cost to run TLA at the moment?

If you want to push the Marauder games partnership, I think running events/promation at the NWGS would be a good route to go down.

The running cost of TLA isn't alot, but it's been a few years since anyone aside from the people who pay it, have payed, and the rest of the money will go into development.

There's an event in the pipeline and the way we're promoting at NWGC, is having 6 of us play a week on wednesday ;)

Awesome!! :D This is great news indeed. TLA will be back like it was before after all, with many articles, a campaign and even more helpful people!
Of course I (and probably many more) would like to donate something for this good cause.

How about some branded items to make some money like the dice from a few years back? Did that actually make any money?

I'm looking at adding a 'mini-store' in the long run, so with the extra proceeds I could buy, say, 1000 TLA dice and sell them off at a non-profit amount (subsidised as the monies already been raised), so TLA has dice and the income repeats itself.

@Sam - We don't expect any members to contribute that much but it really is a personal decision. At the end of the day we don't want TLA to be a business, but we want it to be a haven for all lord of the rings gamers. Heck, if in 5 years time it becomes a specialist game, we want to be able to emulate talk-bloodbowl.net, (or whatever it is after the GW IP purge), and continue going strong and build the game ourselves.

Pretty neat that we are safe from any GW IP purge since the IP isn't actually theirs :P
