Several Goblin armies, both [SBG] and [WotR]

Mon Oct 19, 2009 9:51 am

Okay...prepare for a long read :?

With my Goblin army nearling completion (no, not really, actually...), I need to come up with some lists that work with them.
When I collected all models, I'll have Duburz, Druzhag, 4 boxes of Goblins (of which half of the swordsmen will be converted to Blackshields, in WotR, I'll throw in some spears to fill in gaps), 3 boxes of Wargs (including riders, I'm aiming for 1/3 bows to use as Trackers), Sharku, a Cave Troll, some Castellans (I just love the models), a Goblin Shaman, a bunch of Giant Spiders, a lone Morannon Orc (painted it up at GW), some converted Goblin Captains and all Ringwraiths.
So, I'm now busy making a 1000pts. WotR list and some SBG lists (250, 500 and 750pts.), and I was wondering if you have some advice:
[WotR] - 1000pts. The Misty Mountains with The Fortress of Isengard allies.
The Misty Mountains.
Durbûrz, Goblin King of Moria (Army leader) - 70pts.
Drûzhag the Beastcaller 100pts.

Moria Goblin Warband 155pts.
- 4 companies
- Goblin Drum
- shields
- Drûzhag the Beastcaller

Moria Goblin Warband 40pts.
- 2 companies
- shortbows

Moria Goblin Warband 40pts.
- 2 companies
- shortbows

Warg Pack 60pts.
- 3 companies

Gundabad Blackshields 255pts.
- 4 companies
- Goblin Drum
- Goblin Shaman
- Dubûrz, Goblin King of Moria

The Fortress of Isengard
Sharku's Hunters 225pts.
- 5 companies
- shields/bows

Fates
Tormented Steeds 50pts.

Gundabad Blackshields seem cheap to me. They get +1 Defence, +1 Courage and +1 Strength for free, since Moria Goblins without an upgrade are never used (as far as I know). Throw in a Goblin Drum and Dubûrz and you have yourself a very nice formation. I'm also pretty sure the Ancient Enemies rule will come in handy, and so will the Prowlers rule, which all formations have. The Wargs mostly are for fodder and maybe to flank the enemy where needed.
Sharku's Hunters will be going for the sides, since they have the Prowlers rule and Tormented Steeds, which brings them to S5. The Warg Pack can also protect them from firepower. Drûzhag is also nice, with his rules and spells for the same cost as a normal Shaman.

And now, onto the SBG lists:
Moria - 250pts.
Dubûrz 60pts.
Moria Goblin Warrior w/shield 13x 65pts.
Moria Goblin Warrior w/spear 13x 65pts.
Moria Goblin Warrior w/bow 12x 60pts.

Pretty straightforward, I might change Dubûrz for a Captain or Shaman for a 14/14/14 or 14/14/13 spread.

The Dwellers Below - 500pts.
Drûzhag 85pts.
Wild Warg Chieftain 75pts.
Goblin Warrior w/shield 13x 65pts.
Goblin Warrior w/spear 13x 65pts.
Goblin Warrior w/bow 8x 40pts.
Goblin Warrior w/spear, bow 5x 30pts.
Wild Warg 5x 40pts.
Giant Spider 4x 100pts.
Druzhag can use his magical powers to turn these beasts into annihilating monsters, which can be handy for picking off nasty Heroes who think they can go on a rampage. Shame though that whoever gets cast on probably dies the turn afterwards...oh well...

Moria - 750pts.
Dubûrz - 60pts.
Moria Goblin Shaman 2x 90pts.
Moria Goblin Captain w/bow 40pts.
Moria Goblin Captain w/shield 40pts.
Moria Goblin Drum 100pts.
Cave Troll 80pts.
Moria Goblin Warrior w/shield 22x 110pts.
Moria Goblin Warrior w/spear 22x 110pts.
Moria Goblin Warrior w/bow 18x 90pts.
Moria Goblin Warrior w/spear, bow 5x 30pts.
Spot on the model, bow and points limit. The Goblin Drum and Dubûrz will probably be a nice combo, due to the +1 Courage and extended 'Stand Fast!'. Cave Troll will hide behind my lines and come out when needed. The archers (24 in total) will move forward slowly while shooting, and fight when and where needed.

So, any tips on how to improve these?

I can only see one monster on all of the lists. Why?

Tip: Don't start with WotR lists as not many people play them, and they forget what your title was.

I would suggest Durburz, 2 Shaman, 2 Trolls, Spiders and the rest warriors and captains. As you don't have 2 trolls, Druzhag and some wargs go well. But I like your lists already.

Or you can choose a dweller in the dark instead of a cave troll which is cheaper and more effective

That is true. Dwellers in the dark are still better than cave trolls though.
