Army 'Tactica' Threads in Army Building/Tactics Forum?

Wed Jan 30, 2013 12:02 pm

Hi folks,

Quite a few forums for specific games systems often have dedicated threads to discuss general strategy and tactics for each of the forces in that game. With the influx of new and returning players following the release of the new rules, would this be something people would find useful here?

I'm thinking of a fairly loose format - a thread for each army list, e.g. Gondor, Rohan, Harad, Isengard, and of course discussion about valuable allies to your main force. Alternatively, if this is a bit broad (could end up with a lot of threads!), we could break it down by sourcebooks - with The Hobbit (Good) and The Hobbit (Evil) added on. This also has the advantage of matching the new Throne of Skulls format.

What do people think to this idea?

Good idea, but the problem is that not everybody plays using one force or one book, in fact most best armies are a mishmash of 2-3 books. I guess it's doable nonetheless - have 1 tactics thread per book and 1 for mishmash good and 1 for mishmash evil :)

Sounds good, probably nice for an overview of the various lists.

And what those lists should be, yeah, that's a bit tricky. All a seperate thread would be a mess, as it would mean 25 different ones. Per book is too broad in my opinion though, both thematically as strategically, Isengard has nothing to do with Harad, while Mordor and Angmar (from different books) can probably be merged.

The total amount can perhaps be reduced to the following 12 (mostly grouped per region, playstyle or logical alliances):

Gondor (Minas Tirith + the Fiefdoms)
Rohan
Arnor and Númenor (few people play either, a bit similar too)
High Elves (Eregion and Rivendell + Elrond's Household)
Wood Elves (Lothlórien and Mirkwood)
Dwarves (Durin's Folk + Army of Thror)
Remainder of Good (mostly all-hero or monster armies, so the Shire + the Fellowship + the White Council + Thorin's Company + Wanderers in the Wild + Radagast's Alliance)

Mordor + Angmar + The Trolls
Isengard
Harad and Umbar
Eastern Kingdoms
Misty Mountains (Moria + Goblin Town + Azog's Hunters)

Something like that?

Middle-Earth Monster Mash III - 2nd (Thorin's Company)

I like it but I think Coën's list is to big I would think lists to be more like the sourcebook with all men being grouped together all elves being grouped together and dwarfs being together now, because they will probably get expanded on. With evil I think Coën's list for evil would be the most viable option.

So how about...

Men of the West (Gondor, Arnor, Numenor)
Rohan
The Elves (Eregion, Rivendell, Elrond's Household, Lothlórien, Mirkwood)
The Dwarves (Durin's Folk, Army of Thror)
Legends of Middle-earth (The Shire, The Fellowship, The White Council, Thorin's Company, Wanderers in the Wild, Radagast's Alliance)

Mordor
Isengard
Harad and Umbar
Eastern Kingdoms
Evil in the Northlands (Moria, Goblin Town, Azog's Hunters, Angmar, The Trolls)

That gives us 5 threads for each, fairly thematically grouped. I think regarding "mish-mash" armies, the majority of them do tend to be from a single list, with allies from one or more other lists. So we could keep the discussion of allies within the topic of the main list, if that makes sense?

Looks good to me, aside from the fact that I'd still place Angmar with Mordor (besides book, the only thing Angmar shares with Moria is the option to take a Cave Troll I think, other than that it's just part of the Mordor list (Nazgul, Orc captains/shamans/warriors/trackers, warg riders) with the added spirits, so in terms of army composition and tactics it's more like that).
Geographically makes sense though, name of that group is nice too - speaking of which, I think The Shire can be quite proud to be in the 'Legends of Middle-earth' category :P though of course they did a nice job against those mean ruffians...

And indeed, alliances can be discussed in those various threads: Shades also make excellent allies to X and Y, this army desperately needs cheap spear support, which you could get from army Z etc.

How about putting a 500pt started force that's easy to collect ,a.k.a keeping to the box proportions.

And what about a detailed analysis from every hero?

But If you are going to make tactics, starting forces, maybe the hero analysis,... wouldn't it be better to make a pdf file or something? Sounds a bit to big for a forum alone.

And because of the pdf you can also include nice background and pictures etc. Something like that TLA-magazine but than only the tactics?

Ofcourse tactics are more or less personal opinion, just like the hero discussion...

Middle-Earth Monster Mash II - 4th (Galadhrim)
Middle-Earth Monster Mash III - 2nd (Thorin's Company)
