What to do with the Competitions?

Sun Oct 09, 2011 3:58 pm

The competitions have been fairly dead of late.
Lord Hyper has sugested we go back to monthly (that's 3 weeks of competition btw since the 1st week is for voting)
I thought of specific rules comps to create certain characters or who can make the best version for a specific scenario but never really tried it out.
Anyway, say your opinion on the matter. Will open the next competitions next weekend (was gonna open them now but we might as well discuss the matter a bit before we do that).

I don't think that the comps should be to limited on what can be entered as this would reduce entries, but general themes are goo, and monthly seems fine.

If you want more entries there should be less competitions in my opinion. Make it one or two per year. The Battlefleet Gothic Painting Competition for example is annual. It also has many entries, above 40-50.

If you do monthly be loose on the theme.

As an example for a loose theme, maybe a colour? Then you could theoretically enter anything, as long as you used that colour to a large extent on the model.

Or perhaps a unit that starts with a particular letter, just don't pick Q. ;)

So the dilema between more or less per year continues

Love the colour idea!
Care to pick the first colour? It's your idea after all :P (don't say pink)

Pink would be a bad idea indeed, can't see that bringing in many entries!
That wouldn't solve the problem.

I like to have some competition running all the time, but perhaps not all of 'em all the time. Say in one month there is a scenario and painting competition, next month a conversion comp and one for scenery etc.
Loose restrictions sound good, the 'colour'comps seem like a great idea. I don't have much time to paint lately, so when I do and would have to choose between (A. models for an army or (B. something for a competition, I go for (A. because I have an actual use for those.
In the same way you could say: something with a shield, a cavalry model, a hero.. something you could paint up especially for the competition but also may already be working on. For this month, perhaps a Halloween competition: the scariest thing in the game: with explanation! So if you have arachnophobia, a giant spider would be a good entry, if your are Sauron a little hobbit holding your precious Ring above lava is a nightmare, a Balrog is.. well, always terrifying!

If you go with the colour idea LK, I think Red/Orange should be first. Makes me think of Halloween...

Another question:
If the number of entries is 10 or less should the winner be decided by poll?
The mod vote method is the only way to go with larger competitions but with a small number of entries a poll is a viable option (I think 10 is the limit number of options in TLA polls)

I would say yes, go for the poll if there are less than ten entires, it would help get everyone involved. Even if you don't enter something you can still vote.... :)
